My office is located in Delmar, New York, just outside of Albany in the Capital District of Upstate NY. As an integrative psychiatrist, I often emphasize that mental health depends on much more than therapy or medication alone. While those can be essential pieces, long-term well-being is also supported by regular movement, time outdoors, creative expression, and meaningful social connection.
Below is a collection of local resources that I frequently share with clients—spaces that support mind–body health, foster resilience, and help people feel more connected to themselves and to their community.
Yoga, Tai Chi, and Mind–Body Practices
Jai Yoga offers a wide range of yoga styles for different bodies and experience levels. They also host special offerings such as Y12SR (Yoga of 12-Step Recovery), which integrates yoga with addiction recovery support.
Jai Yoga collaborates with Cat Capowski of Catalyst Mindfulness, who offers Qi Gong a gentle, meditative movement practice that can support balance, nervous system regulation, and emotional grounding.
The Delmar Reformed Church hosts Tai Chi on Mondays at 9am and Yoga on Wednesdays at 4pm, providing accessible, community-based movement in a welcoming setting.
Strength Training and Women’s Wellness
Lift and Breath by Erin Svare Wellness offers a variety of classes including weight lifting (with a special emphasis on women), yoga, personal training, and prenatal and postnatal support. I especially appreciate Erin’s resources page, which includes education on menopause, pelvic health, and women’s health across the lifespan—areas that are deeply connected to mental health and often overlooked.
The local Bethlehem YMCA offers weight training, swimming, an indoor track, and even ice skating. Group classes include Zumba, Yoga, and Nia, which support both physical health and social connection.
Nature, Walking, and Outdoor Wellness
Five Rivers Environmental Education Center - Five Rivers offers walking and hiking trails through forests and wetlands, as well as free educational programs. Time in nature has well-documented mental health benefits, including reduced stress and improved mood.
Elm Avenue Park is a central community resource in Delmar offering walking and nature trails, a public pool in the summer, and ice skating during the winter months. Seasonal outdoor activities like these provide accessible ways to support physical health, regulate mood, and create family and community routines throughout the year.
Local Hiking Resources - The Bethlehem Public Library maintains a list of nearby hikes and also serves as a hub for community events such as crafts, games, and book clubs. I offer Let Your Yoga Dance classes here once per month for kids and caregivers, supporting movement, creativity, and connection across generations.
Biking and Walking
Albany County Helderberg–Hudson Rail Trail This paved trail stretches over 9 miles and is ideal for biking and walking, with rest stops along the way. In the summer months, wild blackberries—packed with antioxidants—can often be found along the trail.
North Bethlehem Park also has Mountain Bike Trails for those looking for a little more adventure.
Community, Connection, and Recovery Support

NAMI Capital Region (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Capital Region (NYNAMI) provides free education programs, peer support groups, and family support for individuals affected by mental illness. These programs can be especially helpful for clients and loved ones seeking understanding, connection, and empowerment.
Community Life and Social Well-Being
Delmar Farmers Market - The Delmar Farmers Market is more than a place to shop—it’s a weekly opportunity for fresh, nourishing food, casual social interaction, and connection with local farmers and artisans. Regular community rituals like this can play a meaningful role in emotional well-being.
Martial Arts Classes - Local martial arts programs (such as Dewey's , Bethlehem Tai Kwon Do and Clobber Jiu Jitsu ) can support mental health by building confidence, discipline, body awareness, and emotional regulation. For some people, martial arts provide a powerful sense of grounding and empowerment.
A Whole-Person Approach
Mental health does not exist in isolation. Therapy and medication are often important, but wellness is also built through movement, nature, creativity, nourishment, and supportive relationships. These local resources offer many pathways to healing and resilience and can help strengthen the foundation that clinical work rests upon.
If you live in or around Delmar, I hope this list helps you discover—or rediscover—what’s available right here in our community.
